The primary function of a dental hygienist is to provide dental cleanings. This is usually done prior to a scheduled dental exam with the dentist, but it doesn't have to be. During a cleaning, a hygienist will scrape away plaque and other deposits that are on the teeth. They may also floss the teeth during this type of appointment.

Check for Diseases

Dental hygienists help dentists in identifying gum diseases and other problems in the mouth. During a cleaning, a hygienist may take note of serious problems and notify the dentist prior to an examination.

Prepare Patients for Dental Examination

More and more, hygienists are doing the preparatory work for visits for the dentist. In addition to cleaning the teeth, a hygienist may also take X-rays of the teeth. This will allow the dentist to see where cavities and cracks are, and it will save time for the dentist.

Assist Dentists During Surgeries and Exams

Although dental assistants are usually the helping hands during surgeries and exams, sometimes the hygienist will be asked to help. Most dental hygienists are trained in the basics of dental assisting and may be required to help in that capacity when a dental office they are working in is short staffed.

What is Required in Dental Hygienist Training?

Most dental hygienist training programs are two years. There are expedited programs out there. If you want to work with a particular dentist or clinic in town, you may want to ask for a recommendation on the school or schools they like to hire people from. This will show your interest in working for them, and it will help you land a job later on.
